The Temporary and Permanent Meanings in the Qur’an: A Semantic Study of Fi’l Mudhari’ and Isim Fa’il
Abstract
This study examines temporary and permanent meanings in the Qur’an through a semantic analysis of fi‘l mudhāri‘ and ism fā‘il. Using a qualitative library research approach, the study analyzes Qur’anic verses containing these forms, particularly Q.S. al-An‘am 95 and Q.S. al-Rum 19, supported by Qur’anic commentaries and Arabic linguistic literature. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed descriptively and interpretively based on morphological form, verse context, and semantic implications. The findings show that fi‘l mudhāri‘ tends to emphasize dynamic processes, continuity, repetition, and renewal, while ism fā‘il foregrounds the doer or a relatively stable characteristic of the subject. The comparison of the two verses demonstrates that morphological differences shape semantic emphasis. Q.S. al-An‘am 95 combines an ongoing process with identification of the doer, whereas Q.S. al-Rum 19 emphasizes repeated transformation. Thus, Qur’anic morphology functions not only grammatically but also contributes significantly to contextual meaning.
